North Star Metric
Back to the frameworks catalog
A North Star Metric is one core measure that, if chosen well, shows both the value you deliver to customers and healthy business growth. Amplitude popularized the idea for product teams: instead of ten conflicting dashboards, one number the whole team can align on.
What a good North Star looks like
- It measures customer value, not internal activity. “Stories closed” is not a North Star.
- It leads sustainable growth. Net revenue can lag; the metric should signal earlier.
- It is actionable. Discovery and delivery should be able to move it.
- It has clear inputs. Three to five input metrics usually sit under the North Star.
Examples: Spotify’s time spent listening, Airbnb’s nights booked, Slack’s messages in teams that reached habitual use. Copying someone else’s metric is a mistake; yours should come from your own Jobs To Be Done.
A common mistake
Do not treat the North Star as a substitute for OKRs or KPIs. An OKR is a period goal; KPIs are a set of measures; the North Star is a compass. If the number rises while customers get worse off, change the metric.
